A Better Way
I vowed this year to make an effort to be less critical and more accepting but this ticks me off. I know it's the goal of PE classes to help your child become more fit but maybe don't schedule lunch immediately before this class and maybe don't make them run a timed mile run in 88 degree heat! C'mon, this is Florida people! The grass melts here.
Considering this, I realize that most kids also wouldn't run full out,(lord knows my chubby butt couldn't do this at 11 years old), but there are kids that can and do. One of them being my son. He's one of those dream students who is self motivated, and hard working, who wants to keep topping his best and will do whatever it takes to do that in everything he does.
However, this time his drive didn't work in his favor. In an effort to out do his fastest time and that beat his 8th grade nemesis, he puked and ended up in the school clinic. A clinic that deemed him sick enough to have him call me to pick him up, yet did nothing to help him cool down and rehydrate. They should have checked his temperature or offered him a cold compress or some water while he waited for a half an hour for me to get there, but do you think they did? No, of course not. I don't think that's too unreasonable to expect, after all how would you want your child to be treated? But I guess that's too much work. Not only that but when I got there he was still in his gym clothes wearing the shirt he puked on inside out. Like another classmate could have brought him his clean clothes.
He ended up being fine after some medicine and TLC from mom but why didn't they do ANYTHING! Maybe there was a shift change or some invisible kid in the corner that I didn't see bleeding out, but I just wanted to go off on the nurse, or the assistant or whoever whose JOB it is to make sure kids are okay ... Ahhhhhh! This is how people become misanthropes.
