Just Another Friday Night

So the "Bear" in the family, (the bearded hunk of masculinity on the far right), created this outstanding app called Growlr.  It's like a match.com that caters to a select group of gay men and has afforded him the freedom to quit his day job to make a living doing what he loves.  Now he hosts meet and greet social events at bars all over the world and essentially rules the Bear universe.  His business venture has been so successful that he paid for all of us ( five rooms) to stay at the Embassy Suites in Washington DC for our first ever family trip since the 1980's trip to Lake Placid, New York during the Olympics.

Here we all are hanging out  in the sound proof, swanky, VIP room of some sketchy bar in downtown DC named "Something Dance" at one of his Growlr events.  As you can see, we all got free drinks for being related to Papa Bear.  My little brother and his wife took that to mean a free pitcher, but hey everyone has their own alcoholic preferences and the right to drink as they please.  That's what our forefathers would have wanted, right?

They may not recall all the details of that night, yet it was a memorable trip all the way around seeing all of the  historical buildings, memorials, and museums to be seen and this dive was no exception.  My sister and I being two of the dozen women in the establishment were of course given the ceremonial gay man ass grab upon walking to the ladies room.  (Just when you think you don't have to worry about that.) Then of course,  once in the restroom we were again predominately surrounded by men who ruled the scence urinating with the door open, leaving  the seat up and making out against the sink.  It was clear we had no power there either which is odd when you consider how highly worshipped  female performers and men dressed as women are among gay men.

Equally confusing was the amount of dancing that didn't take place at an established that has "Dance" in it's name.  It's been over ten years since I've been to gay clubs but if it's one thing that set them apart, it was the music and the dancing.  Maybe it was too early or it was too crowded, but the only people getting down were the drag queens who were battling it out for dollar bills on stage.  Don't get me wrong, the divas were fierce, but my sister in law, wannabe sister in law, sister and I were disappointed that we didn't get the chance to shake it to Rhianna and The Spice Girls too.  If those chics came make a comeback then so can we.  We may have not been wearing leopard print corsets or black fishnets like the other "women" out there, but our curves are real and in our slightly sober minds we think would have looked awesome too.

Here's to some spice in your life!
