Trick or Treat

Dear Miss. Manners,

Recently, a family member invited me to lunch to give me a birthday gift early as they will be out of state on that said day. However, when the waitress asked if it would be one check or two, this family member quickly stated, "Two". Normally, I have no problem going dutch but it was a birthday get together. Is it really asking too much to assume that your blood would at least treat you on your day! This person is retired and not rolling in the dough but it was The Olive Garden and the meal was soup, salad, and bread sticks.

While I appreciate the sentiment, I waited twenty minutes for them, the other member of this pair didn't bother to show, and I even passed on what I really wanted to order to save them money. Where my expectations unreasonable?

Disappointed in Florida

Dear Disappointed,

Unfortunately, since we can't choose our family, these sort of mishaps happen. I find it best to either anticipate the worst in every scenario or to have no expectations whatsoever. That way things will usually turn out better than expected and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I agree, you were jipped but look on the bright side. At least they made an effort, the meal was worth every penny, and no silverware was stolen. Don't take someone else's faux pas personally. If that doesn't work try going to your happy place. Perhaps a song, since you like music. Here's one that's sure to put you in a better frame of mind.
