That Works For Me

I used to wonder why people dreaded doing fairs/expos... Now, after being involved in a few, I have a new understanding.  You're essentially a salesman for the day which is no easy feat even with a great product and/or service and the real poster girl live in person.  Most people walk past you no matter how politely you try to engage them at health fairs.  But at business expos, you face some rudeness, a lot of rejection, and a mounting stack of business cards.  People approach you not because they're interested in what you have to offer but because they want your business. We Medi Angels tried but the most we got were a bunch of fit sales reps curious about checking out their BMI on our scales and a free beer offer from the IT guy at the table next to us.  (No matter how many times we remained professional and declined he felt it was his duty to come around every ten minutes just to check.)

While I enjoyed people repeatedly telling me I was "huge" in my before picture and having to shout over party music being blasted in the background, my favorite part was the quote of the day. "You have really beautiful eyes,"  when said at just the right time was more satisfying than any drink and with no calories too. Technically it's more of a compliment and not a quote but I think compliments should be used more like hard fast truths.  In fact, if done sincerely, think how much nicer everyones' day would be.

Thank you random stranger, for seeing makeup application as the true form of art that it is and for making an effort to recognize my magic trick even if it was besides the point.  I was feeling a little uneasy being out of my comfort zone and trying really hard not to show it.  You made me feel better and helped me smile genuinely in that moment.  I will take that and add that I admire your positive attitude and kind spirit.  I have to work a little more to exude what comes naturally to you.

Now, if only my eyes had the power to persuade everyone that looks at them to try the program.  It could happen and Coldplay could show up and sing Green Eyes just for me at the next event, right?
