Today was the end of the year bowling tornament for Evan's team, the Jesters and he unfortunatley didn't beat Sammy. He's been on that team all year and has come so far, and wanted the trophy so badly, while Sammy just got lucky. The kid has only been there for a month and could barely throw the bowling bowl with enough force to make it to the end of the lane. There was no technique, unless you consider bumper bouncing as a skill. At least Evan lines up his throw, has the proper technique, and rarely hits the bumpers. Then there was the whole issue with the handicap which, of course was another unfair advantage to Sammy. Not to mention the fact that this 5 year old kid kept talking smack and then proceeded to wave the trophy in my child's face. Next week is the annual, (way too long picnic), where Evan will receive his just rewards as having the highest average for the entire year, along with the most bowler of the month awards. He should walk away with too many trophies to carry, so take that Sammy! Okay, so I'm getting all mama bear towards him but just seeing the pure dissappointment on Evan's sweet face as he was trying not to cry, hurt. I wanted to make it all better, to go up to Marie and see if she had an extra trophy she could give him for second place instead of a certificate but Dave reminded me that he has to learn to be okay even when he doesn't win. He was right, of course but I still think at 7 years old, all of the kids in his league should walk away with a trophy.
It reminded me of all time in high school when I was choosen to read my poem for the talent show and received second place to some, popular, pretty blond who sang "Love Will Lead You Back" by Taylor Dayne. As if a 17 year old would truly know anything about that situation. Well, I'm sure she eventually found out that love seldom does lead you back, and that if it does, you run into the same problems and break up all over again anyways. You would have thought that I might have had the upper hand with the whole originality element but no, just one more let down to add to my unfufilling high school experience. In the end though it does build your character and hopefully makes you better for the next time around. It took a little time and a new funkeys tribal set,(Dave is such a pushover), but Evan is in brighter spirits
and will go on to bowl next season in the next league up, without bumpers, while Sammy will still be a Jester.
